A camp of Tamil Tiger rebels was targeted and completely destroyed by the Air Force in Sri Lanka, defense officials said.

The Air Force launched an air strike against a LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Taimil Eelam) Sea Tiger training camp in the Vellamulli-Vaikkala area of the northeastern Mullitivu district around 06:10 a.m. local time (0040 GMT).

The air strike launched by fighter jet aircraft completely destroyed the targeted camp, the officials said.

Meanwhile, one Special Task Force (STF) officer was killed in the eastern town of Batticaloa when the STF team conducting a search operation was trapped in a claymore mine explosion around 07:50 a.m. local time (0220 GMT).

Another STF officer was injured in the explosion launched by the LTTE, the officials said.

Clashes between government troops and the LTTE in Vavuniya and other northern districts have been escalating since mid-July when the government said the Eastern Province was free of rebels.
