Bhutan is best for biking

December 22nd, 2007

That’s what Cliff Krolick 58, a professional mountain biking trainer in the United States, accompanied by Nyendra Wangchuk of AHKE Adventure, had to say after biking in Bhutan for a couple of days.

He describes the drop from Pelela pass to Trongsa, a distance about 70 kilometres, as the longest downhill in the world.

“Bhutan is a beautiful mountainous country and you can always promote mountain biking, which is cheap and has many advantages,” said Krolick. “It protects the environment, helps climate change and keeps people healthy.”

Cliff Krolick said that, in developed countries like Holland and Sweden, people are encouraged to bike rather drive.

Krolick was using a bike with 27 gears, that can go as fast as a car downhill and thrice as fast as walking uphill.

The two cyclists started their journey from Paro and took the east-west Thimphu-Trashigang highway, visiting villages, lhakhangs and historical places along the way and creating awareness on the AIDS virus.
